Australian winemaker Lisa Gilbee and her Italian partner, Gaetano Morella, established the Morella winery in 2000, with the aim of rescuing one or two of the surviving old-vine Primitivo plantations. Gilbee worked as a flying winemaker in Italy and anchored in Puglia, “because you don’t need millions here to buy old-vine plantations and can see the sea from the window of your house”. Today, they cultivate 17 hectares, following organic-biodynamic principles, with two-thirds of their grapes being Primitivo from vines that are over 70 years of age.
In terms of thought, style, look and pricing, this is already in the fine wine category. Primitivos usually age rapidly, but this wine, without denying the variety, reflects a finer attitude: it is not sweet, it is not overwhelming, it is not velvety, it has posture, poise and it’s rich in detail. An elegant Primitivo.
