The Pèppoli winery is located 5 kilometres northeast of the Tenuta Tignanello estate, covering a total of 100 hectares, 50 of which are planted with vineyards. The cellar produces a single wine, Peppoli Chianti Classico DOCG. The estate also has a long tradition of producing extra virgin olive oil and red wine vinegar. The property includes 27 hectares of olive groves with nearly 5,500 trees, some of which are centuries old. Since 1985, the Antinori family has owned the estate, acquiring it to celebrate the 600th anniversary of their winemaking legacy. Despite the unusual east-northeast exposure of the vineyards, the mesoclimate is ideal. The surrounding small valley keeps the area warm and protected, while its gravelly soil, rich in minerals, imparts a lively, fruity character to the grapes. The blend consists of 90% Sangiovese, with 5% Merlot and 5% Syrah. Fermentation is carried out in stainless steel tanks under controlled temperatures, followed by malolactic fermentation and 9 months of ageing in large oak barrels.
Ruby-red colour with purple highlights. The nose opens with intense cherry notes, enriched with hints of violet and blackberry, along with subtle smoky nuances from the barrel ageing. On the palate, it reveals balanced tannins, restrained acidity, subtle fruit flavours and a medium-length finish.
The family’s wine history spans 26 generation since 1385, with novelties that defined the wine world, a network of estates on 1,000 hectares in Tuscany and Umbria, wine, brandy, grappa and olive oil. Books could be filled with the family’s history, and today they are one of Italy’s largest wine enterprises.
