Just a few kilometres from Montalcino, nestled among hills and cypress trees, lies one of the Antinori family’s Tuscan estates: Pian delle Vigne. It is spread across 184 hectares of land, 83 hectares of which are covered by vineyards. The estate made its first Brunello in 1995, and ever since, it has represented one of the noblest expressions of Sangiovese. The grapes thrive on limestone, clay and rocky soils, with the harvest taking place patiently and meticulously from mid-September to early October. The wine is aged for two years in large oak barrels (30-80 hl). The nose entices with fruits, flowers, sweet spices and balsamic notes. On the palate, it is fresh and elegant, being both velvety and full of character, revealing strawberry, cherry and a touch of eucalyptus. The finish is long and pure, lingering beautifully on the palate. Ageing potential of at least 15 years. Wine Spectator: 94 points.
The family’s wine history spans 26 generation since 1385, with novelties that defined the wine world, a network of estates on 1,000 hectares in Tuscany and Umbria, wine, brandy, grappa and olive oil. Books could be filled with the family’s history, and today they are one of Italy’s largest wine enterprises.
