Solaia was first made in 1978, seven years after the release of the famous Tignanello, and has been the symbol of new wave wines and the modern approach to winemaking in Tuscany ever since. The south-west facing Solaia vineyard is the warmest spot of the Tignello estate, situated at an altitude of 350-400 metres above sea level. Its soil is the rocky, stony limestone, known here as albarese. The wine was made from Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc and Sangiovese, aged for 18 months in new French oak barrels. Intense dark, ripe fruit, blueberries and blackcurrants on the nose, accompanied by dried flowers and lavender, plus delicate spicy notes of white pepper, mint and eucalyptus. Solaia is only made in exceptional vintages. The 2018 vintage is creamy and soft, with silky tannins, outstanding elegance and an exceptionally long-lasting finish.
