Set high on a Tuscan hillside near Siena and Perugia lies the historic town of Cortona. On one side, a vast plain stretches out, while on the other, the hill and the quaint town rise up. Visitors to the Santa Cristina winery, founded in 2006, and part of the Antinori family's group of estates, are greeted by a breathtaking panorama. This wine is a blend of Merlot, Sangiovese and Syrah harvested and fermented separately to preserve the primary characteristics of each variety. After 9 months of ageing in barrels, complete malolactic fermentation occurred, resulting in a soft, velvety and rounded palate. The nose is intense and complex, with ripe fruits and herbs. On tasting, it is balanced and light, with a medium ruby-red colour featuring purple tints. The nose reveals dark, ripe fruits paired with warm spices. On the palate, it is very fruity and flavoursome, with melting tannins, ripe berry aromas and a juicy, medium-length finish.
The first Santa Cristina was bottled by Niccoló Antinori in 1946, but the independent estate has only been operating since 2006 in Cortona, Tuscany. Besides Vermentino, Greco Bianco, Trebbiano and Sangiovese, they also work with international varieties. The classic Santa Cristina is made as red, white and rosé.
