Racehorses and grandiose wines: Tenuta San Guido has always been about these. The gravelly, stony soil reminiscent to that of the Médoc in Bordeaux led to the planting of the two Cabernet varieties here, but the wines had just been drunk by friends and family at gatherings for many years. Only later did the Marquis (Mario Incisa della Rocchetta) hire Piero Antinori's winemaker, Giacomo Tachis, as a consultant. 
The first vintage that was commercially released was the 1968, which created a new category: it was the first ‘Super Tuscan’ wine. Since then, one of the greatest classics of Italian wine has been made without local varieties, and from the beginning with a blend of Cabernet Sauvignon and a small amount of Cabernet Franc. In 2020, it was also made with 85% Cabernet Sauvignon and 15% Cabernet Franc. The careful selection is followed by fermentation in tanks with its own yeast, two years of ageing, one-third in new, two-thirds in second-fill French barriques. As the first Italian wine with 100 points, Sassicaia also inspired the world-famous Tignanello, Solaia and Ornellaia wines.
