An iconic New Zealand wine, from the 2021 harvest. Both viticulturally and topographically, New Zealand is the furthest away from us. Unrealistically bright colours, ripe bunches when the buds over here are just starting to appear, and an endless amount of Sauvignon Blanc in the vineyards. The whole thing is a lot easier to understand with a glass of Cloudy Bay. Everything is in there, from fresh-cut grass to white-fleshed peaches, gooseberries, nettles and limes. Reductive winemaking, fermentation with selected yeast in tanks, blended with a few percent of oaked components, which come from 87 different batches. A New World fans’ favourite.
Cloudy Bay Vineyards was established in 1985 by Cape Mentelle, the Western Australian winery, which today is a part of the Moet Hennessy Wine Estates.
The company farms 140 hectares of vines at three carefully selected sites. Vineyards planted in 1986 surround the winery in the Wairau Valley at Rapaura, with additional plantings at nearby Renwick and in the Brancott Valley, in the southern foothills. Five long term contract growers also work closely with Cloudy Bay.
