The 2022 vintage was not an easy one for Dog Point. Nevertheless, the ’22 Pinot glows, exuding aromas and flavours of sour cherry compote, blue plum skin and rhubarb stalk. The grapes from a site planted in 1983 undergo an overnight cold soak after hand harvesting. Fermentation takes place in open vats, with 75% destemmed fruit and 25% whole bunch, where the wine rests for three weeks before being transferred to French oak barrels for 18 months of ageing. The whole-bunch fermentation adds just enough foresty spiciness, which the saline, earthy character keeps in check and propels forward. On the mid-palate, red cranberry bursts like caviar, while the wine’s true strength lies in its silky tannins, ensuring a dreamlike evolution with age.
