Dog Point is the family estate of Cloudy Bay’s former managers (Ivan Sutherland and James Healy). Its name comes from the first settlers in Marlborough, who instead of a fence, protected their sheep with shepherd dogs. Some of the dogs ran away, formed packs, and their home became the bush-covered hill overlooking the plain – Dog Point. The indigenous tree of the hill (ti kouka) is still a characteristic feature of the landscape, from which the two families harvest. Cultivation is organic, and they vinify only their own grapes from the low-yielding Sauvignon Blanc vines. After quick pressing and cool fermentation, it takes a few months before the balance of the fresh wines returns and they are bottled without fining, only with minimal filtering. The wine’s style is original, the familiar aromatics of the place of growth are complemented by rich substance, lively flavours and fine balance. That’s what the bestseller is like from one of New Zealand's best-known family estates.
