2018 was the year of excitement on the estate: the warm and dry December was followed by abundant rain during the harvest at the beginning of the year. Still, the grapes that arrived at the winery were – following several rounds of selection – of excellent quality. The hand-harvested Pinot comes from clay, pebbly soil, from the southern part of the Wairau Valley, from Cloudy Bay’s own Mustang and Barracks vineyards. It was given an 18-day, spontaneous fermentation on the skins, in steel tanks, then it spent 12 months partly in new French barrels. A powerful nose and palate of berry fruits, cherry and plum, silky tannins and complex barrel spices. Long and taut.
