Who is Dirk Niepoort? A wide-angle lens. Someone who isn’t satisfied with merely wanting to do something different from his father, and who isn’t satisfied with the idea that the Douro is only the home of port. He wants to travel farther and think more freely. He is reviving historical wine styles, and this history is far broader and deeper than that of fortified wine. He believes that while port is a treasure, it is only part of the Douro; that the Douro is the world’s greatest vineyard region, but the world will only realise this once it first gets to know and embrace Portugal.

The 2024 Niepoort ADN Alvarinho is the result of a collaboration between Anselmo Mendes and Dirk Niepoort, made from 100% Alvarinho from the Monção and Melgaço areas of the Vinho Verde region. This region gives the grapes their character through its unique balance of rain, temperature and sunlight.

Behind the ADN name lies the shared intention of Mendes and Niepoort: to create wines that draw both on the local terroir and the two winemakers’ different experiences. The goal is to establish a balanced, sustainably-minded wine family in which the proximity of the Atlantic Ocean and the granite soils can truly be felt.
