After the notable first encounter with La Florens 2018 and the two red blends that followed, we couldn’t stop ourselves from introducing a fourth wine from Josep Grau’s estate – this time, an exceptional white. Initially, Josep made wine only for personal consumption, completely sulphur-free and in a minimalist style, sharing just a few cases with a local restaurateur to have on hand for family lunches. By chance, a Swedish sommelier tasted this wine during a visit, marking a turning point in Josep's winemaking career. His old-vine Garnacha wines quickly gained recognition, establishing him as a leading name in Montsant, the appellation encircling Priorat like a ring.
Granit can be seen as the white counterpart to La Florens. Like its red sibling, it is a single-vineyard wine from old vines and 100% Grenache – specifically Grenache Blanc. The 2.5-hectare, sea-facing parcel is divided into three terraces, with soil composed entirely of granite. The vines are over 40 years old and cultivated organically. After a manual harvest, the grapes are destemmed, pressed and the must ferments spontaneously in 20-hectolitre Stockinger barrels. The wine then matures for 9 months on the lees, resulting in a textured, expressive and terroir-driven white.
In his estate that was launched in 2003, Josep Grau made wine initially just for himself, and only gave a few cases to local restaurants. It was an accident that a Swedish sommelier happened to get a glass of his wine, when he was in one of those restaurants. That’s when Josep’s wine career took a serious turn.
