After a striking first encounter (La Florens 2018) and the two red blends introduced since, we couldn’t stop there. We’re now presenting a fourth wine from Josep Grau’s estate, and this time, it’s a white. In the beginning, Josep made wine only for his own consumption – without sulphur, in a completely minimalist way – and he’d give just a few cases to the local restaurateur to have on hand for family lunches. It was by pure chance that a Swedish sommelier happened to be poured a glass of this wine during a visit. That moment marked the turning point in Josep’s winemaking career – his old-vine Garnachas quickly gained attention, and today he is a leading figure in Montsant, the appellation that encircles Priorat like a ring.

Granit can be seen as the white counterpart of La Florens, as it too is a single-vineyard wine from old vines, made entirely from Grenache, or more precisely, Grenache Blanc. The 2.5-hectare, sea-facing vineyard is divided into three terraces, with pure granite soil and vines of over 40 years old.

The organically cultivated grapes are harvested by hand, then destemmed and pressed before the must undergoes spontaneous fermentation in 20-hectolitre Stockinger oak barrels. The wine is aged for nine months, together with the lees.
