Alvaro Palacios grew up with his eight siblings on the Palacios Remondo estate, so it was only natural that he too would pursue a career in wine. His journey took him to Château Pétrus, where, after several years of experience, he returned as almost the second in command at the winery. His work as a barrel seller allowed him to explore Spain’s historic wine regions, and on one such trip, he discovered the then-largely-unknown Priorat. He immediately fell in love with the 12th-century vineyard terraces and the austere, slate-based soils (locally called licorella). Starting with the 1989 vintage, his name became synonymous with the region. His first vineyard was Finca Dofí, and in 1993, he acquired the legendary grand cru site, L’Ermita, planted between 1900 and 1940. From the earliest vintages, this wine has been one of Spain’s most highly esteemed and expensive.

When Alvaro entered Priorat in 1989, only four wineries operated in the region. Local growers sold their grapes to cooperatives, where bulk wine was churned out and sold for less than €1 per litre. Ten years later, a bottle of L’Ermita fetched over €400, and today, it’s valued at nearly three times that amount.

The estate’s other celebrated classic is Camins, a blend based on Garnacha and complemented by Cariñena, Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and Syrah. It encapsulates everything that defines Alvaro Palacios’ wines: capturing Priorat’s wild, bucolic essence while remaining supremely refined, elegant and cosmopolitan. It bursts with red fruit, juicy flavours, fine-grained tannins and just the right amount of depth. A pure joy to drink.

Alvaro Palacios

Alvaro Palacios is not an easily frightened man. As a descendant of one of the most famous viticulturist family in Spain he decided that his father's results and his eight brothers' (!) ambitions, who are also very committed to the wine, would not frighten away from his goal, which was not less than making a wine which could mix the good qualities of Pétrus and Grange. Nothing was left to chance, he learnt the viticulture and wine-growing in Bordeaux, then he worked for the great Château Pétrus in Pomerol by the side of Jean Pierre Moueix. After his return to Spain he naturally chose the more difficult way: instead of drawing back into the safety of the family cellar in Rioja he bought his first vine-plantation in Priorat.
