Priorat is an amazing place. Besides Rioja, it’s the other DOCa, i.e. the highest classified wine region in all of Spain. A Mars-like landscape, black and red slate and quartz soil, sharp black stones that are called llicorella in Catalan. Dizzyingly steep terraces and stony hillsides. Apart from grapes, there’s hardly any vegetation, and the region is often dry. Camins was created under these circumstances, from 40-year-old vines with roots that go down to a depth of 20-30 metres for water. 60% local varieties (Garnacha and Carignan) blended with international varieties (Cabernet, Syrah, Merlot).

Its name comes from the little roads connecting the villages, which were probably all used by the harvest workers, since the grapes were selected from 101 smaller parcels. Organic cultivation, slow, manual harvest, spontaneous fermentation, gentle pressing. Aged for 4-6 months in used barrels.

It’s an energetic and layered red wine. Fragrant strawberries, yogurt and sweet milk chocolate came to mind when tasting it.
