Only a few people know that the well-known Valbuena 5º once had a younger, shorter-aged version – Valbuena 3º. It stopped being made in 1987, but its spirit, juicy and fruity character lives on in Alión, which was launched in 1991. Its name refers to the birthplace of Don David Álvarez, in the autonomous community of León. Although the first vintages were still produced on the Vega Sicilia estate, production was soon transferred to his own winery, Bodegas Alión. The two wineries are located close to each other, only a 10-minute drive away from each other.
In addition to the highly regarded grapes from La Horra, Roa and Gumiel de Mercado, there is a secret ingredient – a small amount of grapes from the Vega Sicilia estate. The 2018 vintage is both ripe and fresh – an elegant and straightforward style will make it a favourite of many. Diverse fruits, aromas of graphite and oak, a soft and long palate.
