The legendary wine of Vega Sicilia, in which the varying proportions of Tempranillo and Cabernet Sauvignon bring the perfect harmony. Its grapes grow in an area that lies at the meeting point of the alluvial plain and the hillside. At the Spanish winery that has the most employees per hectare, the five years of barrel ageing is carried out in French and American oak barrels made by their own cooper. After that, the wine has to rest for another five years in the bottle. This special winemaking practice is unique and according to our knowledge, there’s no other winery that does it the same way. In 2012, despite the seemingly insignificant, only 5% presence of the Cabernet Sauvignon, the variety appears recognizably and prominently in the blend. A deep and long wine with the dominance of tertiary notes, lots of sweet spices, menthol, eucalyptus, cedar and graphite aromas.
The 210-hectare estate by the River Duero is the centre of the Alvárez empire. Harvesting 10 years after planting, chemical-free cultivation and three blends in the whole selection: Único produced in exceptional vintages; Reserva Especial blended from the best vintages; and Valbuena harvested from the younger vines.
