East of Valladolid, on the banks of the Duero River, lies the iconic Vega Sicilia estate, surrounded by vineyards. Of the 210 hectares here, 140 are dedicated to making Vega Sicilia Único.
This legendary wine undergoes an extraordinary ageing process, spending more than 10 years in oak and bottle. It possesses timeless ageing potential. True to its name, this exceptional blend pays tribute to the estate’s Tempranillo and Cabernet Sauvignon vineyards.
The 2015 vintage ripened quickly, evenly and with exceptional quality. Choosing the harvest date was crucial: the grapes were picked in an al dente state – when the berries were still firm, fresh, and juicy – avoiding overripeness.
This vintage also held special significance for Gonzalo Iturriaga. “It was my first vintage at Vega Sicilia,” the winemaker recalls. “Even while tasting the grapes, I understood that there is something truly special about this estate: you can feel the concentration and power, yet also elegance and silkiness. That’s the foundation of a great wine.”
Once you experience this level of concentration, it immediately becomes clear why the unique ageing process used at Vega Sicilia is necessary: five years of oak ageing, beginning with about one and a half years in barrels to give the wine structure, followed by a second phase of roughly three and a half years in large oak vats, which adds an entirely new dimension to the wine.

The 210-hectare estate by the River Duero is the centre of the Alvárez empire. Harvesting 10 years after planting, chemical-free cultivation and three blends in the whole selection: Único produced in exceptional vintages; Reserva Especial blended from the best vintages; and Valbuena harvested from the younger vines.
