The second wine of Vega Sicilia is the purest expression of a truly special place of growth, even within the region of Ribera del Duero. The steep hillside is 700-900 metres high, has 19 soil types, 52 parcels, 96% Tinto Fino (the local clone of Tempranillo) and the usual 4% Merlot. It’s the second vintage of Gonzalo Iturriaga, the current chief winemaker of Tempos Vega Sicilia. In the first year, it was aged in new and used 225-litre oak barrels (75% French, 25% American), and in the second year in large 20,000-litre vats, and finally in the bottles – true to its name for at least 5 years. The challenging weather of 2017, its fresh and fruity grapes resulted in a harmonious, complex and spicy wine with soft tannins. Plum, sour cherry, blueberry, chocolate and vanilla. The palate is both powerful and fresh, with a very long finish.
The 210-hectare estate by the River Duero is the centre of the Alvárez empire. Harvesting 10 years after planting, chemical-free cultivation and three blends in the whole selection: Único produced in exceptional vintages; Reserva Especial blended from the best vintages; and Valbuena harvested from the younger vines.
