The Sierra de Gredos border region is in the middle of the country: this is where north and south separate, barely an hour from Madrid. There are conifers, juniper bushes, rosemary and lavender. On the dry and stony soil, old Garnacha plantations are scattered like vegetables, at an altitude of 800-1,000 metres. The air is cool, clean and filled with spices. The same image captured Telmo Rodríguez when he started his estate here, in Pegaso, in 1999.
The name was inspired by a 1940 Spanish car that’s familiar to collectors, the project started with a couple of abandoned plots, and Telmo's partner is none other than rally and Dakar legend, Carlos Sainz Sr.
A selection of the estate's slate-soil parcels (Arrebatacapas, La Redonda, La Curva), from old vines. It got its name from the special pizarra stones: a transition between brown slate and granite that cover the ground here. It’s a special wine with a broader body compared to Zeta, and has fine, grainy tannins. The grapes grown at an altitude of 850 metres are cultivated organically. After manual-harvesting and destemming, the wine is fermented spontaneously on the skins, and then ages for 2-2.5 years in used, large French barrels. Sunflower, rosemary, balsamic vinegar, with a fine and silky structure. Deep and intense flavours, dry on the finish.
5,815 bottles of it were made.
