The Sierra de Gredos is a borderland in central Spain, where the north and south meet, just an hour away from Madrid. Here, pine trees, juniper bushes, rosemary and lavender dominate the landscape. On dry, rocky soils, scattered old Garnacha vineyards thrive at altitudes of 800–1,000 metres. The air is cool and crisp, with the scent of herbs. This enchanting scenery captivated Telmo Rodríguez in 1999 when he established his Pegaso estate here.
The name was inspired by the iconic 1940s Spanish car called Pegaso. The project began with a few abandoned plots, and Telmo’s partner was none other than rally and Dakar legend, Carlos Sainz Sr.
The Pegaso village wine is approachable, refined and easy to appreciate. It is a blend from renowned vineyards, such as Robledillo, Mojón and Presidente. The organically-cultivated Garnacha was manually-harvested, destemmed and spontaneously fermented. It spent six months ageing in used French barrels, followed by further ageing in tanks, with bottling one year after harvest.
The wine has a subtle pomegranate colour with aromas of wild strawberries and fresh green herbs. Thanks to the granite and slate soils, the palate is warm, mineral-driven, thirst- quenching and seamless. It is a true terroir wine in the noblest sense of the term.
