The Sierra de Gredos border region (between Castile y León and Extremadura) lies in the centre of the country, where north meets south, just about an hour from Madrid. Conifers, juniper bushes, rosemary and lavender. On the dry, rocky soil, old Grenache vineyards are scattered like garden plots at 800-1,000 metres above sea level. The air is cool, clear and scented with herbs. The same scene captivated Telmo Rodríguez when he established his estate, Pegaso, here in 1999. The name was inspired by the 1940 Spanish car familiar to collectors.
The project began with a few abandoned parcels, and Telmo’s partner was none other than the rally and Dakar legend, Carlos Sainz Sr. This is the Pegaso range’s village wine. Pleasant, delicious and easy to enjoy. A blend from notable vineyards, such as Robledillo, Mojón and Presidente, grown on a mix of slate and granite soils. The organically cultivated Garnacha is hand-harvested, then destemmed and undergoes spontaneous fermentation. It is aged for six months in used French oak barrels, followed by further maturation in tanks. Bottling takes place one year after the harvest. A tempting translucent garnet colour, with aromas of wild strawberry and green herbs. Thanks to the granite and slate soils, the palate is warm and mineral, yet refreshing and smooth. A true terroir wine in the noblest sense of the word.
