Few people know that once there was a younger, shorter-aged version of the well-known Valbuena 5º, which was called the Valbuena 3º. It was discontinued in 1987, but its spirituality, juicy and fruity character lives on in Alión, which was launched in 1991. Its name refers to the birthplace of Don David Álvarez, in the autonomous community of León. Although the first vintages were still made on the property of Vega Sicilia, production was soon moved to its own winery, Bodegas Alión. The two wineries are just a 10-minute drive away from each other.

In addition to the highly-regarded vineyards of La Horra, Roa and Gumiel de Mercado, Alión also contains a secret ingredient, with some grapes coming from the Vega Sicilia estate.

In 2017, severe frosts hit the northern part of Spain, making the vintage significantly more difficult. However, some parts of Ribera del Duero escaped the difficult weather conditions, and the dry and warm weather following the frosts ultimately made it possible to harvest grapes with the right concentration and quality. They chose used Tranasaud and Sylvain barrels, whose profile best suited the challenges of the vintage, to maintain freshness.

Alión 2017 opens slowly, it’s initially closed, so it’s worth giving it the right time in the glass. It’s a deep wine with aromas of ripe blackberries, earth and truffles. Its colour is darker than usual, with a mineral and full palate and long ageing potential.
