Telmo Rodríguez stands as one of Spain's most influential winemakers of our time. With elemental force and without pretence, he demonstrates why indigenous varieties matter, why a place of growth's character is inimitable, and why a region's forgotten vineyards and crumbling stone walls hold such significance. His 'Corriente' transports us back to an era when Rioja produced wines without external influence, from mixed plantings, with each village crafting distinct styles. The term 'corriente' (literally 'ordinary') on the label pays homage to the honest, everyday table wines of that bygone age.
A blend of Tempranillo, Graciano and Garnacha, predominantly from old bush vines in Rioja's cooler, rocky reaches. Spontaneously fermented and aged in concrete and used barrels. A shorter ageing than traditional Rioja results in a distinctly different character: this wine speaks of its varieties, of black fruits and of fine, powdery tannins. The palate is delightfully enjoyable yet simultaneously angular and subtly dry. Blessed is the nation where such wines grace everyday tables.
