Among Telmo Rodríguez's single-vineyard Riojas, Las Beatas enjoys unparalleled acclaim and is today one of Spain's most sought-after small-batch red wines. Following perfect 100-point scores for the 2016, 2018 and 2019 vintages, James Suckling has also awarded the 2021 vintage a perfect score. In Spain, this wine represents the absolute equivalent of grand cru, offered at a fraction of the price compared to Burgundy.
The 1.9-hectare Las Beatas vineyard is a steep, northwest-facing slope with 8-10 tiny terraces, cooled by gentle winds. This site, with a history tracing back to the 7th century, which took 15 years to restore from overgrown shrubland to a productive vineyard, has always been of great significance. It has mixed plantings, with Tempranillo and eight or nine other traditional local varieties. The cool 2021 vintage delivered exceptional balance to Rioja wines, showcasing a more classical and intricate style. Las Beatas embodies this at the highest level, unmatched by anything else in the region. It exudes floral aromas, a stunningly precise structure, with polished, profound and long flavours, and remarkable depth with lightness and juicy fruit.
