Tinta de Toro is what they call the local clone of Spain’s defining Tempranillo grape variety. In Toro, the soil is sandy, pebbly, and the vines are often over 100 years old and bush-vine trained. The raw material of the Dehesa Gago comes from such plots. Telmo Rodriguez has brought together such local growers who believe in old plantations and low yields, and cultivate their land using organic methods and have many generations of local knowledge. The aim is not the infinitely long ageing potential typical of the wine region with this wine – it is always bottled at a young age, after 4 to 6 months of tank ageing. The palate is concentrated, spicy and vibrant with cherries and subtle smokiness. A warm and dry aftertaste follows the juicy palate.
