Based on the Bordeaux example, Opus One has been producing a second wine, called Overture, since 1993. In terms of the viticultural work, there’s no difference between the first and the second wine, and essentially the same raw material as in the Opus One goes into the bottle. As part of the very selective blending process, some batches are left out, and these spend additional time in the barrels, with vintages combined to achieve the elegance and complexity that shows the style of the estate the most precisely. That’s Overture. Aged in French barrels, it’s a blend of the five varieties used in Opus One: Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Cabernet Franc, Petit Verdot and Malbec.
