An unmissable sweet wine legend from the leading estate of Sauternes. The iconic sweet-wine château, which was founded in 1590, was fortunate in 2022 not to share the fate of the 2012 or 1992 vintages, when no wine was made. In Sauternes, this vintage produced wines of excellent quality; however, due to weather conditions, they are available in smaller quantities, which is despite the fact that winery typically makes its sweet wine from around a tiny 9 hectolitres of must per hectare.
The world’s most famous dessert wine was, in this year as well, made from a blend of Sémillon and Sauvignon Blanc grapes, which are made truly special by Botrytis cinerea (also known as noble rot).
In the traditional way, 200 people, in several sweeps of the vineyards, hand-select the highest-quality botrytised grape bunches, which are then also pressed in multiple stages at the winery, after which the must is fermented in new barrels in a unique manner characteristic of the wine region.
Each bottle of Château d'Yquem contains two distinct characters. In its youth, everything revolves around fruit – alongside the dominant apricot and mandarin notes, the acidity is also remarkably vibrant and fresh.
On the palate, warmer, creamier flavours also appear, such as oak and vanilla. Older bottles of Château d'Yquem show a completely different aromatic profile: incredibly complex, with notes of dried fruits, jam and sweet spices, cinnamon, saffron and liquorice. The mouthfeel is silky, rich and enveloping.
